Magento 1's end of life: Why we think Epi is a great alternative
Magento 1’s sunset is fast approaching
Magento has been a big fixture of the ecommerce scene since its release in 2008. Its open-source functionality paired with its limitless potential has seen hundreds of thousands of merchants fly the Magento flag from their storefront. These days, it’s got a very commendable 1.9% share of the ecommerce platform market, handling over $155 billion worth of transactions every year and serving as the site framework for top industry names like Ford, Coca Cola, Nike and Liverpool FC.
But ten years is a long time in the ever-changing digital world, and with the end of the decade, Magento’s parent company Adobe has released Magento 2, setting a sunset date for supporting Magento 1 in June 2020.
So far so good, but Magento 2 has come with a couple of issues that have proven problematic for many stores. For one thing, Adobe has moved a lot of features that stores relied on from the free community edition to the expensive enterprise edition. For another thing, moving from Magento 1 to Magento 2 isn’t just a standard upgrade process: it’s a complex migration which for many stores is equivalent to a full re-platforming project. When looking at a Magento 2 upgrade, many businesses are left wondering if an alternative platform might offer better value for the additional investment they’re being asked to make. The good news is that there is still time, but you’ll need to move pretty quickly.
If you're considering making the move, we think Episerver Commerce could be a great alternative to Magento 2, depending on your requirements.
